Giant City State Park - Horse Camp Pond
Location 2 acres
Fishing Outlook
Redear Sunfish
Developing
Historically, Redear were not present in Horse Camp Pond. However, Redear often provide additional angling opportunities in ponds, and have little impact on other species due to their unique diet of mollusks (snails, clams, etc.). Redear Sunfish were introduced to Horse Camp Pond during 2022 as an attempt to establish a population. During the 2024 electrofishing survey, two 7" Redear were collected, likely age-2 fish from the 2022 stocking, indicating the stocking was successfull. A self-sustaining population of Redear will likely become established and complement the quality Bluegill fishery.
Largemouth Bass
Good
During the 2024 electrofishing survey, only eight bass were collected as a consequence of very low water conductivity, which limited the effectiveness of electrofishing gear. Bass in the sample measured 5.9" to 14.1" in length. Largemouth Bass are typically abundant in Horse Camp Pond and are the primary drivers behind the quality size structure of Bluegill.
Bluegill
Very Good
During the 2024 electrofishing survey, only eleven Bluegill were collected as a consequence of very low water conductivity, which limited the effectiveness of electrofishing gear. Bluegill in the sample measured 2.2" to 8.3" in length. The Bluegill fishery in Horse Camp Pond has typically been of good quality, with preferred numbers of Bluegill over 8" present.
Channel Catfish
Good
During the 2024 electrofishing survey, three Channel Catfish were collected. Lengths ranged from 12.7 to 18.3 inches. The fishery for Channel Catfish is maintained by annual stockings and is popular among anglers at Giant City State Park.

Description
Horse Camp Pond is a 2-acre impoundment managed for quality Bluegill and Redear Sunfish fishing. The perimeter of the pond is mowed periodically to allow access to anglers. The pond can be accessed by a short walk from the horse campground through site-maintained trails.Fishery History
The most recent electrofishing survey of Horse Camp Pond occurred during June of 2024. Survey results suggest that Horse Camp Pond will continue to provide good opportunities for quality Bluegill over 8 inches, in addition to Largemouth Bass in the 10- to 14-inch range. Non-vulnerable size Channel Catfish (8 - 10 inches) are stocked annually to enhance angling opportunities; several were collected during the 2024 electrofishing survey. Redear fingerlings were intentionally introduced during 2022 with the intention of establishing a population. Fortunately, two 7-inch Redear Sunfish were captured during the 2024 survey, indicating that redear should become established and complement the quality Bluegill fishery.Site Regulations
