Description

Powderhorn Lake was developed by the Forest Preserve District of Cook County in 1958, however it has glacial origins and was part of the Calumet Area Wetland Complex. Powderhorn Lake is 48 acres and has a shoreline length 1.3 miles. The lake's watershed is 192 acres (4 to 1) and it has a maximum depth 18 feet and an average depth 9 feet. There is a concrete boat ramp and an outhouse, but no concessions are available. Kayaks, canoes and row boats with electric trolling motors are allowed but no outboard motors can be attached to the boat.

Fishery History

Periodic fish surveys are conducted to update the status of the fishery. Very little stocking takes place in Powderhorn Lake. The fishery is maintained by natural reproduction.

Site Regulations

Non-motorized watercraft and boats with electric trolling motor only; no gas outboards can be attached. Designated ice fishing lake.

Site-Specific Fishing Regulations:

  • All Fish: 2 pole and line fishing only and each pole must not have more than 2 hooks or lures attached while fishing; no minnow seines, minnow traps, cast nets or shad scoops allowed
  • Bluegill or Redear Sunfish: 15 Fish Daily Harvest Limit
  • Large or Smallmouth Bass: 14 inch Minimum Length Limit; 6 Fish Daily Harvest Limit
  • Walleye, Sauger, or Hybrid Walleye: 18 inch Minimum Length Limit; 6 Fish Daily Harvest Limit
  • White, Black, or Hybrid Crappie: 15 Fish Daily Harvest Limit
