Fishing Outlook
Largemouth Bass
Very Good
Merganser Lake typically supports a quality fishery for Largemouth Bass. Results from the 2024 electrofishing survey suggest a strong year-class of young 8-10" bass, which are likely age-2. These small bass constituted a much higher proportion of the bass sample than the previous survey in 2022. Larger bass up to 18.5" were also collected during the 2024 survey and demonstrated excellent body condition, suggesting a plentiful food supply. Mean relative weights dramatically increased at 14", indicating the size at which bass can fully utilize the standing stock of large Gizzard Shad over 7".
Bluegill
Fair
Electrofishing survey results suggest that Bluegill growth potential is limited by competition with Gizzard Shad and Common Carp. No Bluegill over 8" have ever been collected during surveys. The largest collected during the 2024 survey measured 7.7" in length.
Crappie spp.
Very Good
Merganser Lake has both Black and White Crappie, in addition to naturally occurring hybrids. The size structure of crappie in Merganser Lake is impressive, as most collected during surveys are 10-14" in length. Anglers should expect good opportunities for crappies over 10" in length. In addition, several brush piles and trees were recently sunk in the lake to enhance angling success, especially for crappies.
Channel Catfish
Good
Merganser Lake supports a self-sustaining population of Channel Catfish that demonstrate excellent growth potential. Several Channel Catfish were collected during the 2024 electrofishing survey, ranging in length from 17.7" to 27.2" and weighing up to 10 lbs. Although Channel Catfish usually do not reproduce well in small waterbodies, the abundance of large rock substrate in Merganser Lake likely provides ideal spawning habitat and shelter for juveniles, allowing for a self-sustaining population.

Description
Merganser Lake is a 20-acre strip mine lake located within the Captain Unit of Pyramid State Park. This lake is over 90 feet deep and has clear water with primarily rocky substrate. Aquatic vegetation is limited due to the rocky bottom. There is a paved boat ramp and small parking area. However, anglers should note that launching larger boats may be somewhat challenging given the shallow slope of the boat ramp.Fishery History
Merganser Lake provides quality fisheries for Largemouth Bass, Black and White Crappie, and Channel Catfish. Bluegill are present but do not grow large enough to provide a quality fishery, likely due to competition with Gizzard Shad and Common Carp.Site Regulations
