Giant City State Park - Allen Pond

Fishing Outlook
Channel Catfish
Good
No Channel Catfish were collected during the 2025 survey. However, the fishery for Channel Catfish is popular among anglers and is maintained by annual stockings. Anglers have been observed catching and harvesting Channel Catfish from Allen Pond.
Largemouth Bass
Good
During the 2025 electrofishing survey, Largemouth Bass were captured at a high rate of 218/hour, exceeding the management target of 200/hour. Bass in the sample ranged in length from 7.3 to 14.6 inches. Although growth potential is limited, the observed high density of small bass is desirable in this case, as it is the primary driver of Bluegill and Redear growth.
Bluegill
Very Good
During the 2025 electrofishing survey, only four Bluegill were collected, although two of them were over 8 inches in length. For a small pond, the electrofishing catch rate for Bluegill was very low, indicating heavy predation by Largemouth Bass. In summary, the Bluegill fishery in Allen Pond is characterized by low abundance, but excellent growth. Bluegill body condition in Allen Pond appears to be the highest among all ponds in the park.
Redear Sunfish
Very Good
During the 2025 electrofishing survey, only six Redear were collected. All six Redear measured between 10 and 11 inches in length. Redear body condition was very high as well, indicating fast growth. Therefore, the population structure is very similar to Bluegill.
