Description

This lake is a 40-acre strip cut that is mostly surrounded by the state fairgrounds. There is no boat ramp open to the public. However, most of the lake shore is well maintained and is accessible to shore anglers. This lake receives a considerable amount of fishing pressure due to the ease of public access and location within the City of Du Quoin.

Fishery History

Long Cut Lake was not sampled by IDNR prior to 2021. A spring fish community survey is now completed on a biennial basis to monitor the fish population. A 2023 sampling effort consisted of a 30-minute electrofishing survey and overnight gill net sets. The lake has an abundance of small bass, with very few larger bass present. Options for panfish include, Bluegill, Redear Sunfish, Black Crappie, and Yellow Bass, all of which demonstrate quality size structure. The Channel Catfish population is sustained through stocking and supports a popular fishery for local anglers. The lake also harbors an abundance of large Gizzard Shad.
