Fish Status

BLUEGILL

Poor

Bluegill numbers are a high but the size distribution and quality is still poor. The condition of the fish collected has poor. The bluegill population of this lake remains poor for various reasons. The presence of gizzard shad and heavy bluegill harvest are likely the primary influences.

CHANNEL CATFISH

Good

This lake maintains a good population of channel catfish. Six channel catfish were collected in the 2017 survey, ranging in size between 16-19 inches with an average weight of 2.2 pounds.

LARGEMOUTH BASS

Very Good

The number of largemouth bass was very high in the recent survey. The current bass population appears well distributed in several year classes of fish. There also appears to be decent reproduction and recruitment of largemouth bass. The bass have a good food source of small bluegill and gizzard shad. Heavy harvest pressure is likely the primary limiting factor for this fishery.

Location: Jones Park is located north of Interstate 64 and across from the Jackie
Joyner Kersee Center in East St. Louis, IL.

History and Status of the Sport Fishery: The lake receives supplemental stocking of channel catfish and largemouth bass. It is also stocked with rainbow trout in the fall and spring. These programs provide the most fishing opportunities possible for this small public water with very heavy fishing and harvest pressure. The largemouth bass population maintains very good numbers and fair size and quality. Current management practices and stocking programs should continue to provide quality fishing opportunities in the future.

Additional Lake Information: 2 pole and line fishing only.
