Species

Rank

Fish Status

BLACK CRAPPIE

Very Good

Black crappie are present in the system. Six were captured, the largest measured over 11 inches. We do not recommend stocking crappie in lakes this small as they can quickly overpopulate.

BLUEGILL

Excellent

Bluegill were vary abundant and captured at a rate of 225 fish per hour. This is higher than the management goal of 120 fish per hour and higher than the 2015 survey. This number should not get out of hand with a healthy bass population. Bluegill ranged in length from 2.4 to 6.8 inches, with an average length 4.5 inches. Size structure looked better than in 2015 with a handful of fish measuring longer than 6 inches in the 2020 survey.

CARP

Very Good

Twenty-five common carp were captured in 2020. They ranged in size from 12.8 to 17.9 inches, averaging 16.2 inches. The heaviest one weighed 2.3 pounds. Common carp are very abundant in system of retention ponds. Since they are interconnected during high water, there is no way of getting rid of them. Unlimited harvest is encouraged for this detrimental species.

LARGEMOUTH BASS

Very Good

In our 2020 electrofishing survey, 39 Largemouth Bass were caught in twenty minutes of shocking (117 fish per hour). The average bass was 9.9 inches long and length ranged from 2.4 to 17.7 inches. The heaviest bass weighed 2.9 pounds. Fifteen percent of the bass were over the 15-inch size limit. The majority (52%) of the fish were in the 12-15 inch range. Abundant forage species (Bluegill, Gizzard Shad, White Sucker, and Black Crappie) keep the bass in this lake fat and healthy. Multiple size classes were present in the sample without supplemental stocking, indicating natural reproduction is occurring in the lake.

Location: Barrington Lake is located on the south side of Aurora off of Eola Rd. From RT 34 head south on Eola Rd. and turn right (west) on Barrington Rd. Parking is on the street.

Description: Barrington Lake is a four acre dug retention pond which is part of system of lakes used for storm water retention. The lake is owned and maintained by the Fox Valley Park District (FVPD) as a community park in a residential setting. The shoreline is mowed in several areas to allow access for shore fishing. Another fishing lake, playground, facilities and basketball courts are located at Wheatland Park a just across Eola Rd.

History and Status of the Sport Fishery: The FVPD has entered into a cooperative management agreement with the Illinois Department of Natural Resources to facilitate fisheries management activities. An electrofishing survey took place in September of 2020 as a follow-up to the 2015 survey. Site specific regulations apply.

Largemouth Bass abundance was down slightly from the previous survey but still high. Abundant Bluegill should offer anglers plenty of action in this suburban park. Barrington Lake offers easy access for a quick shore fishing get away for local anglers. Small numbers of Black Crappie are available to anglers as well. Common Carp are abundant in this system and harvest is encouraged!
