Fish Status

Very Good

There appears to be a relatively good Bluegill fishery in Canada Goose Lake. During the 2021 spring nocturnal electrofishing survey, A total of 55 Bluegill were collected during 30 minutes of electrofishing. 16% of the Bluegill were over 7 inches in length and 5% were over 8 inches. The largest Bluegill was 8.3 inches in length and weighed 0.4 lbs. The high density Largemouth Bass population is the likely driver behind the quality-size Bluegill present.

There is a dense population of Largemouth Bass present in Canada Goose Lake. During the 2021 spring nocturnal electrofishing survey, A total of 71 bass were collected during 30 minutes of electrofishing. Growth appears to be slower than other lakes in Pyramid State Park, as 80% of bass collected were under 14 inches and only 3% of bass were over 18 inches. This is likely a consequence of the oligotrophic nature of the lake and the low density Gizzard Shad population in the lake, which is primarily composed of very large adults in the 13-15 inch range.

Location: Pyramid State Park is located south of Pinckneyville in Perry County. The Captain Section is accessed off Panda Bear Road. From State Route 127, head west on Pyatt-Cutler Road. About 6 miles west of Pyramid State Park, turn north onto Panda Bear Road.

Description: Canada Goose Lake is a 60-acre strip cut located in the Captain Unit Pyramid State Park. Water clarity is very high in this lake. There is a gravel boat launch, but no dock or bathroom facilities.

History and Status of the Sport Fishery: The first fish community survey ever conducted on this lake occurred during April of 2021. The nocturnal electrofishing survey suggests that anglers can expect to catch numbers of small bass in the 10-12 inch range, but opportunities also exist for bass in excess of 6 lbs. Bluegill in excess of 8 inches are also present in the lake and should provide good opportunities for Bluegill anglers in comparison to many of the other lakes in Pyramid State Park.
