Fish Status

Bluegill were collected from Arrowhead Lake during the 2019 survey at a rate that was lower than that of the previous five years. Fifty-three percent of bluegill were larger than 6 inches (exceeding the management plan goal), but the proportion larger than 7 inches decreased from 9 to 6%. Bluegill body condition was above the management plan goal range.

Very Good

Channel catfish were collected at a rate during the 2019 Arrowhead Lake electrofishing survey that was a slight increase compared to the previous year. Channel catfish ranged in size from 13 to 22 inches and were in fair condition. Channel catfish are stocked every other year to sustain the population. Site Regulation: 6 fish daily limit

Very small numbers of black and white crappie were included in the 2019 Arrowhead Lake sample. White crappie ranged 6 to 12 inches, while black crappie were 7 to 10 inches in length. Crappie body condition remained substandard. Site Regulation: 15 fish daily limit.

Very Good

Largemouth bass were collected at a rate in spring 2019 that was right inline with the management plan goal. Percentage of 12-inch and larger bass was higher than the previous 18 years at 76%. Most bass ranged from 9 to 14 inches in length, and 39% of bass sampled were larger than the upper end of the lake’s slot limit of 15 inches. Bass body condition was above the management goal. Site Regulation: 12 to 15-inch protective slot; 2 bass per day under 12 inches and 1 per day over 15 inches.

Very Good

Redear were less abundant than bluegill, as usual, in 2019. Fifty percent of redear were larger than 7 inches in length, and 50% were larger than 8 inches. Redear body condition remained very good.

Very Good

Yellow bass (7-10 inches) were collected at a a high rate, and these fish have the potential to impact growth and survival of all other sport species. For this reason, anglers should be encouraged to remove yellow bass from Arrowhead Lake whenever possible.
