Fish Status

BLUEGILL

Very Good

Bluegill were collected from Herrin #1 Lake during the 2021 survey at a substantially higher rate compared to the previous sample, but quality of these fish was similar. The bluegill electrofishing catch rate was 336 per hour, and 35% were over 6 inches . Also, twenty five percent were larger than 7 inches. Bluegill body condition stayed excellent.

CHANNEL CATFISH

Good

Channel catfish were collected at a rate of 22 per hour of electrofishing during the 2021 survey, which was up from the previous sample. These fish ranged from 16 to 22 inches in length, and their condition was excellent. The channel catfish population is normally maintained by stocking every other year, but an additional 1,000 non-vulnerable channel catfish were stocked in 2019 because of a hatchery surplus. Site Regulation: 6 per day creel limit.

CRAPPIE

Poor

Crappie are generally very scarce, and both black (2/hr) and white crappie (17/hr) were collected at low rates. All crappie had substandard body condition

LARGEMOUTH BASS

Improving

Abundance of largemouth bass in Herrin #1 Lake, based on electrofishing catch-per-unit-effort was slightly lower in 2021. Largemouth bass were collected at a rate of 160 per hour.
